Softball
If you're interested in joining/fielding a team, please come to practice tonight, Thursday, 14 January, 7:00 p.m. at Bowl America on Guinea Road. Cost for 3 games is $11.50. Wives are also invited and are welcome. In the past, other councils have entered all-women teams and mixed teams.
Practice takes place twice a month; 2nd and 4th Thursdays, at 7:00, Bowl America on Guinea Road. We need to determine whether a team or two can be entered for the 1 February 2016 deadline. Steve Brown used to record scores to obtain the average score of each bowler to determine their handicap.

A new season is on us although the weather doesn't look like it. We had a great year last year and I do appreciate the good turnout for all the games. I will continue the e-mail reminders and required responses for each game date. It worked well in not having as much fear of forfeit and our ability to make a batting order up prior to leaving for the fields.
I attended a coach's meeting last night. There will be preseason practice and 2 games April 16 thru 29th. Our regular season will be 8 double headers from April 30 thru July 2 and a single elimination tournaments a few days after July 4th. We will not have any dates until a few days prior to the preseason and regular season start dates. There are no new rule changes although we did have some extensive discussions and voted on 1) Requiring catchers wearing a mask and helment, and 2) adopting a 2nd homeplate (scoring plate) to eliminate collisions at home. After much discussion both were voted down with an open option of the 2 managers discussing and agreeing to try either or both before the start of the game. Wearing a catchers mask has always been an option based on individual choice. The girl in the coed division that brought the attempt to require a mask had a girl who lost a few teeth last year. If anyone on our team has a catcher's mask they would like to loan to the team please let me know. They also discussed with the new Umpire In Chief that no metal cleats are allowed.
I do have a requirement to send in a new roster to the Commissioner who has to send all team rosters to Fairfax County by March 31st. So if you are not playing at all this year please let me know. Also if you know of a brother Knight, neighbor, wife, son or daughter who would like to play please let me know. They must be between 15 and 90 and students playing for High School or College teams are not allowed. Assistant Coach Mike Mannion and I will be putting a softball recruiting link on the new web page shortly. Get in shape and be ready for our first nice spring Saturday practice at Robinson HS or a field to be determined.
