NEWS FOR KNIGHTS

Papal visit results in big jump in positive view of Benedict and Church, poll shows

One third now more likely to vote and be more active in community and church

(NEW HAVEN, CT) - A poll taken immediately following the conclusion of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United States shows that it had a powerful impact on public attitudes toward the pope, the church, and a willingness to live their faith more fully.  The nationwide poll of 1,013 adults was commissioned by the Knights of Columbus and conducted by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion between April 22 and April 24, 2008.   Marist conducted a similar poll prior to the pope's visit, allowing before-and-after comparisons.

Among the highlights of the poll results:

·         65%  of Americans have a more positive view of Pope Benedict as a result of what they saw and heard during his visit

·         52% have a more positive view of the Catholic Church

·         The proportion of Americans with a favorable view of Pope Benedict jumped from 58% prior to his visit to 71% afterward

·         The proportion describing the pope positively as a spiritual leader went from 53% to 62%

·         The proportion describing him as a good or excellent world leader went from 41% to 51%

·         56% see his ability to promote good relations between the Catholic Church and other religions as good or excellent, up from 40% prior to his visit

·         More than a third (35%) say they are now more in touch with their own spiritual values as the result of the pope's visit

Even more importantly, nearly half (49%) now have a better understanding of the Catholic Church's positions on important issues, and a significant proportion of Americans are prepared to change their personal involvement as a result:

·       About four in ten say they are more likely to lead a moral life and make family a bigger part of their lives

·       One in three are more likely to participate in elections, community activities and their churches as a result of the papal visit

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said that the poll results "show clearly that Pope Benedict has presented the Catholics of the United States with a tremendous opportunity.  Americans are a religious people, and they responded very positively to the message of faith, hope and love that the Holy Father delivered throughout his visit.  It is now up to all of us in the Catholic community to walk through the door he has opened for us, and work together to build a civilization of love."

Council 8600 sponsors Aníbal Marel Álverez Méndez, (see photo) a 24 year old second year seminarian at the National Seminary of the Assumption in Mixco, Guatemala.  He was born on March 5, 1984 and is one of 13 sons of Policarpo Álverez Castillo and María Marta Méndez.   His father farms, while his mother cares for the children.  Upon ordination in year 2013, Bishop Gabriel Peñate will assigned Aníbal to a parish in his Diocese of Izabal, Guatemala.

  • BROTHERS (this is a non-Council sponsored event)
Brother Dan Turgeon, our Council Chancellor, will be ministering to the inmates during a prison retreat at the Greensville Correction Facility in
Jarrat, VA from 14 - 18 May.  Through Kairos Prison Ministry, he will be offering spiritual and temporal assistance to inmates and their families in the transition of becoming a productive citizens; keeping with the teachings of Matthew 25: "Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do unto me".  This program compliments the Prison Ministry of Arlington Diocese that Sr. Connie Parcasio directs.

Dan is asking for your prayers on Friday, May 16, from 6:30 AM to 1 PM when he and other volunteers will be ministering to inmates and their families.  When they realize that someone on the outside is dedicating themselves to pray for them--it opens their hearts and minds to spiritual healing.

Besides prayers, one of the inducements to attract the inmates and their families to this spiritual retreat is what is known as the "Cookie Ministry", where refreshments and cookies are served (up to 150 dozen).  Assistance is needed to bake cookies for the inmates and their families.  Cookies can be dropped off at the 6 May council meeting or at St. Mary's Parish Center, care of Colleen Turgeon, after Mass on the weekend of May 11th.

If you can help with prayers or cookies, contact Dan Turgeon at (703) 239-8644 or at djturgeon@aol.com for detail information and correctional facility baking guidelines.

Your Council needs more volunteers to make calls to 20 fellow knights about 4 or 5 times a year (about 10 hours work per year).  Great duty for knights who are gregarious or busy or infirmed, in any combination.  First calls for the year will be the September Route 123 cleanup.  Send your email address to Gene Molinelli at e.molinelii@att.net to help out with the endeavor - it's vital to our many other programs.

Visit the District 14 website for dates for degrees and other upcoming events.

Glory Days Grill will contribute 10% of any receipt to a worthy cause.
Get you receipts to Al Obuchowski to help support the Marian Home.
