KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ST. MARY OF SORROWS COUNCIL #8600 RECORDER NOTES
NOTES OF ST. MARY OF SORROWS COUNCIL #8600 MEETING, 6/6/06 :
1. THE GRAND KNIGHT CALLED MEETING TO ORDER AT 8:05 PM.
We will have a different order to our meeting. First we will present awards. Then we will adjourn for 20 minutes for food and beverage. Then we will have a short closed meeting to attend to Council business. Then we will open the remainder of the meeting to our guests and brothers. (Note, the order of the meeting followed the above instructions even though they are recorded below in the usual order).
2. MEMBERSHIP CARDS WERE VERIFIED BY THE WARDEN – at 8:55 PM.
3. THE OPENING PRAYER WAS LEAD BY THE GK.
4. THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIENCE WAS LEAD BY THE WARDEN.

The GK then turned the meeting over to Br. Fred Walker who will present our scholarships. ………

Thank you Fred. Fred always does a great job with the scholarship committee and really enjoys doing it. He also is the Chairman of our Marian Homes and I have something to present to him (by the GK).
We have some awards to present some other deserving youth and Knights.
Winners of the Youth Poster Contest We have 2 winners of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Poster Contest Mary Catherine Turgeon and Elizabeth A Walker
Young Women of the Year Jessica Burbach (please come up) Member of the Nat. Honor Society (Span. Eng. & History) 3.93 GPA for past 3 years, Active in DECA won 1ST & 2ND place in Communication and Food Marketing, top 10 in State A 4 year Soccer All Star also played basketball, coached youth She is the current President of the Squire Roses past VP & Treas
Young Man of the Year Greg Bonderant Greg has a 3.2 GPA A member of St Mary’s Youth Group, Group Work Camp, Active in the Spaghetti Dinners and Pancake Breakfasts and many Fund Raisers For fun he is a member of Robinson Auto and Rifle club Greg is the current Chief Squire and also Santa at the St Mary’s youth Christmas Party.
Knight of the Year This gentleman could have been our Knight of the Month almost every month. He is very active in our church Lecturer, Eucharistic Minister, Bereavement Committee, Money Counter and active in all our Fund raising Activities, If I could give him a nick name it would be old reliable. Whenever I need advice he had some useful input. When ever there is a tough assignment that everyone seems to be shirking I will hear him say “Worthy Grand Knight I’ll be there”. Last year he and his 3 sons worked tirelessly on the Hall renovations. Our Head Chef for our Spaghetti Dinners and Leader of the 5 Car Raffle please welcome Worthy Past Grand Knight Jim Cella
Family of the Year Our nominee is a member of the Choir, Social Action Committee and Pastoral Council. A major recruiter for our order he is also very active in fund raising, getting gifts and food for visits to our soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital. He, his wife and daughter are ushers, work the Doughnut Ministry, prepare food for many of our social and charity events. Are active in Help the Homeless projects as well as many other Knight and Church activities. Please welcome Charlie Catherine and Charli Gulac.
At this point, a 20 minute break was initiated so that all can participate in food and beverage. When we return, we will have a short closed business meeting followed by an open meeting.
At 8:55 PM the meeting was reconvened by the GK.
6. THE MINUTES WERE READ FOR LAST MEETING,
The minutes were read and approved as read.
7. REPORT OF ADMISSION COMMITTEE:
Br. Obuchowski read in three applications for membership: Timothy H. Slayter John P. Beauchemin Cyprien E. Houndje, Rev. (Fr. Ephrim) All were voted and approved.,

Polish Night and Installation of Officers changed from June 30 to TBD
9. READING OF BILLS AND CORRESPONDENCE:
We received a thank you note from Holland Henn for the scholarship we provided.
We received a thank you letter from Jacquelyn Hair the Director of Operations for the Arthritis Foundation for our contribution in support of the Virginia Arthritis Walk.
We received a thank you letter from Faith T. McCormick and Cynthia Howell-Roye Co-Chairs of the Donation Committee of the 2006 Robinson ALL-Night Graduation Party for our contribution.
We received a thank you note from Matt Marcheschi of FOCUS for our support.
We received a thank you note from Meredith Smith for our support of her service trip to New Orleans.

11. TREASURER’S REPORT:
Br. Callaghan reported that we are Solvent. B/S as of May 31st was healthy.
12. FINANCIAL SECRETARY REPORT:
Br. Torrey reported on receipts for the month. Received over $20K for car raffle work of Br. Cella.

Second improve a home weekend went well. At Arthritis walk we appreciate the participation that earned $350. This upcoming weekend we have the Fairfax Weekend.

The faculty sponsor at Robinson High School sent us some pictures from the Graduation Sponser.

From last meeting, Br. Barone moved for up to $750 for the baseball game. Seconded by Br. Br. Cella. And tabled until this meeting.
This motion was voted and approved.
17. NEW BUSINESS: -
The GN turned the meeting over to Br. Obuchowski, the chairman of the nominating committee to conduct the annual election of officers for the coming year. Br. Obuchowski read the slate of nominees:

Br. Obuchowski asked if there were any nomination from the floor three times.
Br. Barone moved that the slate be accepted by nomination as a whole. Seconded by Br. Walker. A vote was taken and approved unanimously.
GK took the gavel and asked for other new business.
Br. Walker moved to release the last $750 for HOPe OF NO. VA. Br. Cronin seconded. Voted and approved.
Br. Obuchowski moved we donate $500 to Cancer Walk. Seconded by Br. Cella. Voted and approved.
Br. DeRosa moved for up to $1,000 for cost of picnic. Seconded by Br. Obuchowski. Tabled until next meeting.
Br. Gilding moved for $500 for vocational support for Ed Bresnahan. Seconded by Br. Sakraida. Voted and approved.
Br. Obuchowski moved to provide $3,000 for Father Efrim to help with his schooling. Seconded by Br. Derbach. Tabled until next meeting.
Br. Sacraida moved that we allocate up to $700 for a computer for the recorder. Second Obuchoski seconded. During discussion the worthy treasurer suggested that we do more research into the software and hardware needed for the position and get a more accurate price before voting. Br. Wassif will review options and have more information for next meeting. It was moved by Br. Phelan that the amount be increased to $1,200. Seconded by Br. Wassif. Tabled until next meeting.
Br. Lee commented that we should consider limiting support for seminarians to those from St. Mary of Sorrows. Discussion was held and no action was taken.
18. DISTRICT DEPUTY REPORT:
None. The GN reported that Br. Curran is retiring and Br. Poumade will become the District Deputy.
19. REPORT OF THE 4TH DEGREE:
Br. Lee reminded us of the upcoming Corpus Christi procession.
On June 21st will be the end of year assembly (including steak night).
20. FIELD AGENT REPORT: - NONE
21. GOOD OF THE ORDER: . PRAYERS WERE OFFERED FOR CONTINUED RECOVERY AND GOOD HEALTH FOR AILING BROTHERS, WIVES AND FAMILIES. WE PRAY FOR THE POPE AND ALL PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, THAT THEY MAY BE REVITALIZED IN THEIR MINISTRIES. PRAYERS FOR THOSE WHO LEAD AND SERVE IN THE MILITARY AT HOME AND ABROAD. PRAYERS WERE OFFERED FOR THE SOULS OF DECEASED BROTHERS, THEIR FAMILIES AND FOR MEMBERS OF BROTHERS’ FAMILIES..
Br. Tim Shea reported on a recent trip to France including Normandy Beaches, especially Omaha Beach.
After presentation, the GN presented Br. Shea with the Family of the Month award from last month.
