NOTES OF ST. MARY OF SORROWS COUNCIL #8600 MEETING, 4/4/06 :
1. THE GRAND KNIGHT CALLED MEETING TO ORDER AT 8:02 PM.
The GK immediately called for the meeting to go into recess for 25 minutes because the hot food was ready.
The meeting reconvened at 8:27 PM.
2. MEMBERSHIP CARDS WERE VERIFIED BY THE WARDEN
3. THE OPENING PRAYER WAS LEAD BY THE CHAPLAIN.
4. THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIENCE WAS LEAD BY THE WARDEN.

8. GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT: GRAND KNIGHT REPORTED.
Mark Forest Event was discussed and all who attended raved about it. Will be repeated in Lake Ridge soon.
April 8 & 9 – Spaghetti and Pancakes. Will have traditional music live for the Spaghetti Dinner (banjo performer).
April 12th – Friendly’s will donate 20% of receipts to Arthritis Walk.
Br. Armstrong is doing a great job on web site.
April 18th we will have an open meeting – Have a surgeon speak on breast cancer and surgery.
April 19th – Fourth Degree meeting
April 20-23 – Kovar
John Bosco Council meeting April 24th meeting will have a pro-life Congressman speaking.
April 29th – Approve a Home
May 6th – Special Olympics at Episcopal HS
May 6th – State Meeting (weekend)
Golf Outing – May 11th (Thursday) - Tentative
First Degree – May 16th – St. Mary’s Meeting
May 19th – Memorial Mass for deceased Br. Knights and family members.
Family in Montrose VA lives in a small house in need of repairs. House infested now with termites and the family needs a new home. Will be looking into what we can do to assist.
Would like to build a car port for Father’s car on Sunday and other uses. Have a flyer with one for $1,200. Need volunteer to investigate.
9. READING OF BILLS AND CORRESPONDENCE: We received a thank you letter from The Lamb Center for our recent $400 contribution.
We received a letter from the Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, notifying us of a resolution passed denouncing pornography and asking the entertainment industry to refrain from producing pornography. He also urges us to support Morality in Media, Inc., an organization founded by a priest in 1962. He further encourages the Council to sign up for a $50 affiliated membership. More descriptive material has been enclosed.
We received a letter from Fr. Rocco Puopolo who is now serving as a Rector of Graduate Student community at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He thanks us for the membership card we sent him in Sierra Leone, where he was previously stationed and asks us to update his records.
10..CHAPLAIN’S REPORT: . Palm Sunday coming up – holiest time in Church Year. Please try to attend ceremonies and remember to wear your badges.
Dec 17th – Mark Forest will return with a Christmas meditation presentation.
Expressed thanks to the Knights for all the support provided.
11. TREASURER’S REPORT:
$103K+ in assets. Highest level ever per records.
P&L for March was read with details. Net $7333.29

Read income from last several meetings and events.

1.April Improve-a-Home Project – Tim Shea has identified team captains Please volunteer at website for April 29 –or back up date of May 13 to get assigned to a team. Announcement from pulpit Sunday and in bulletin next few weeks. 6.KOVAR – KOVAR is still going 20-23 April. - Site Captains are making their calls to volunteers – please help them out. You can do more than one shift. - Any special requests for times or locations – contact Scott Leitch - Scott needs some money counters Sat 9AM-6PM at Worship Center and Sun 9-6 at OSMH. Please call him to sign up. Great opportunity for those who can’t stand for a few hours
*There are still three slots for phone tree volunteers. Phone tree has been very effective in getting turnout for various programs. Will be used next week to get volunteers for April Improve a Home. Please call or email Gene Molinelli if you can help.

Br. Garry reported on Hypothermia Dinner meeting which was a great success.
Br. Shea reported on Improve-A-Home plans and needs.
Br. Cella reported on car raffle. Three more weeks to go.

Br. DeRose reported on Squire Roses won bowling tournament beating wives of State Officers and the Squires team. Also trip to Capitol on Friday – see Columbian Magazine for religious symbols at Capitol. Also pancake breakfast this week at OSMH. Also, baseball coming. Finally Squire Roses will be doing beanie babies for Bagdad.

Br. Halpin moved $100 to support Robinson graduation party. Seconded by Br. Lee Voted and approved.
Br. Shea moved improve a home funds up to budgeted amount of $1600 be made available as needed. Seconded by Br. Cella Voted and approved.
Br. Wilkinson moved up to $500 for nationals tickets up to 50 tickets (August 13th – Mets vs. Nationals Sunday @ 1:05 PM – we will get 50+ tickets) Seconded by Br. DeRose. Voted and passed.
Father Barkett noted that Fr. Ephrim enjoys soccer if anyone would like to invite him along some time.

19. REPORT OF THE 4TH DEGREE:
.Alive and well and very strong.
Organizational meeting here last week. Master of Fourth Degree decided we would remain a member of Fr. Molloy Council.
A new assembly will be formed of other Councils.
Have been asked by Fr. Barkett to provide 4th Degree presence at Confirmation, Holy Week Ceremonies, and other events.
Two upcoming 4th Degree meetings this year.
Sunday May 21st mass at National Shrine – Military Mass sponsoring canonization of a military priest.
20. FIELD AGENT REPORT: Br. Jones –

GK indicated that four candidates for field agent have been identified.
GK thanked Br. Barone for putting on a dinner for PGK this past weekend and also for the meal tonight.
21. GOOD OF THE ORDER: . PRAYERS WERE OFFERED FOR CONTINUED RECOVERY AND GOOD HEALTH FOR AILING BROTHERS, WIVES AND FAMILIES. WE PRAY FOR THE POPE AND ALL PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, THAT THEY MAY BE REVITALIZED IN THEIR MINISTRIES. PRAYERS FOR THOSE WHO LEAD AND SERVE IN THE MILITARY AT HOME AND ABROAD. PRAYERS WERE OFFERED FOR THE SOULS OF DECEASED BROTHERS, THEIR FAMILIES AND FOR MEMBERS OF BROTHERS’ FAMILIES..
Past GRAND KNIGHTS IN ATTENDANCE:
Cella, Barone, Obuchowski, Meinsen, Crowder, Lee, Kasmerik. DiGregorio, Stevens, Gauthier, Walker, Jacobson, LaFrance, Buttimer, Garry, Donovan, Sakraida, PGK Jones (highlighted names present).
For the good of the order PGN DiGregorio presented a discussion on KOVAR. Has $2,300,000 net worth. Receive $6-700,000 each year and pass on as grants. Use the net worth to fund loans for group homes and other capital projects helping mentally retarded.
Hope soon to be able to start owning and operating group homes.
Will provide $150K interest free loan to any Council who want to open a group home.
Presented a plaque to Br.Carl Kasmerick as honoree by KOVAR. Presented plaque to Br. Walker to hang in the group home (Marian Homes). Br. Vanderbeek discussed his aunt who recently passed. She was an active participant in the Greatest Generation.
